Introduction

Types of Lighting

Ambient or general lighting

Ambient lighting in a room is what we refer to as General lighting. This is the primary means of lighting and the mood creating element for a room. It is the natural light that a space gets from the sun during the day and the artificial light that mimics natural night in the evening hours. Ambient lighting is used in a design to create depth in a room, it adds warmth, as well as set the mood.

Task Lighting

Lighting fixtures like table lamps, desk lamps, and under counter lighting. They are used to create light for tasks, such as cooking, hobbies, reading, and highlighting art an design pieces. This is the second layer of lighting designers use to build on the ambient lighting in a room.

Accent Lighting

Decorative fixtures like wall mounted uplighter and foot/floor lamps add a third level of lighting texture to a room by helping to create the desired mood and feel for the room, accent lighting is used to highlight features of the room as well as draw attention away from other areas. Accent Light fittings need to be incorporated into the planning and designs of the room as they create the feel and scene for the room.

LUMENS EXPLAINED

In simple terms, Lumens (denoted by LM) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a light source. The higher the lumen rating the brighter the lamp will appear. Lumen is the term used to describe the total amount of light emitted by a light source, while wattage merely indicates the amount of energy it uses. As lighting becomes more and more energy-efficient, the same number of lumens is being achieved with lower and lower wattages.

WHAT IS AN IP RATING?

IP is an acronym Ingress Protection. It is a measurement of the protection an item will have against solid objects and liquids. - The first number (0-6) refers to the level of protection against solid objects and moving parts, such as dust, debris, or other solid matter. The second number (0-8) references the level of liquid and moisture protection. With an IP65 rating, the LEDs can be used in an outside setting and are water-resistant but they are not waterproof and are not suitable to be submerged

COLOR RENDERING INDEX (CRI)

A color rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. Light sources with a high CRI are desirableas as the lightsource will bring out the true colour of the object. N-Light LED has a CRI value of >90.

KELVIN EXPLAINED

Kelvin is used in lighting to measure the colour temperature of a particular light source. And in short, the higher the Kelvin rating (expressed in K), the whiter or more blue the light will be.
